Pain Free, Hair Free

Everything you need to know about Laser Hair Removal

It is a matter of fact that laser hair removal is one of the safest ways of removing hair. It is probably more dangerous to shave, wax or plug than to use a laser. Cuts, ingrown hair and infections are a common reality for many women and men who have their daily battles with their unwanted hair. Laser hair removal will enable you to win that battle, permanently and pain-free.

Laser hair removal involves using a laser to heat the small cavities in the skin, known as follicles, which hair grows out of. The laser light destroys the follicles, which prevents future hair growth in that area.

Hair follows a specific growth cycle with three distinct and concurrent phases: anagen (growing), catagen (regression) and telogen (resting, not growing) phases. Each phase has specific characteristics and all three phases occur simultaneously; one strand of hair may be in the anagen phase, while another is in the telogen phase.

The laser treatments affect only the anagen-active hair growth phase. That is the reason why one needs several treatments, as it cannot be predetermined in which phase the hair is currently, but it is estimated that it is between 15-25% of hair that is in the “right” growth cycle for laser treatments.

15-25% is also the range of hair reduction after each session, and the time frame between sessions should be 4-6 weeks.

This ensures that all hair is exposed to the laser once it reaches the anagen phase. There are however some people who see an even higher hair reduction after each session. Taking this into account the average number of sessions is between 6-10 sessions.

There are some factors that can have an influence on this, such as hormonal changes, the area to be treated, the structure of the hair, as well as gender. Gender is an interesting point, as the laser hair removal industry has experienced an increasing number of men undergoing laser treatments over the last few years. The beauty image of the furry chest (Before and After illustration below) is long gone and more and more men choose to get rid of the reminder that still connects us to our cavemen past.

Usually, men show a higher density of hair in certain areas, such as the face, and therefore, might require more treatments than women. To the same time, men’s potentially thicker hair may lead to great results. Many advances have been made in laser treatments. One such advance is that more people can safely have laser hair removal. In the past, only people with dark hair and light skin could safely have laser hair removal. Today, laser hair removal is also a treatment option for people with light-coloured hair, light skin as well as dark skin. This, however, depends on the right laser machine device. There are various laser devices on the market, and many service providers offer treatments with machines that do not give you the full benefits.

The most effective treatments are the ones that are done with either an Alexandrite Laser or a Diode Laser. Alma took these facts to the next level by combining these two lasers into one device, called Alma Soprano ICE. To the same time, the handpiece that is in contact with the skin during the treatment is drastically cooled down (that’s why it is called ICE) which ensures that the skin is never exposed to burns, and the heat only absorbed by the hair follicles. This is really revolutionary and brought laser hair removal to the next level. This technology enables us to treat all skin types and colours as well as hair colours, with one exception; grey or white hair. The laser requires a certain level of what is called melanin in the hair, and unfortunately, grey and white hair does not have melanin anymore. But who knows what advantages future laser technologies will hold for us.

Last year, we at K SPA had acquired the best laser machine currently on the market. Our FDA approved Alma Soprano Ice ensures that we offer our clients the best hair removal treatments for the best price. Our laser therapists have undergone extensive clinical training, and our registration with the approval of the Department of Health pays testimony to our commitment to the highest safety standards.
